[edit]Needs a gut rewrite. Fails on so many levels right now is just a good example of a bad article. First you need to make clear the difference between a politician and someone exercising authority on another basis, such as a monarch or military commander. Second the fine gradations of the political class and their activities and functions as such (distinct from the socially useful ones, the executed office) should form the body. Finally, as ever, the core concept needs to be made clear in the lede. A politician is a person who must obtain a consensus in a political body. The non-politician executing the same function does not. Lycurgus (talk) 05:06, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
:It is problematic to define the scope of an article on this topic. I have half a mind to propose merger with Politics - if anyone can point the way to making "Politician" a separate worthwhile encyclopedic article, please state: Noyster (talk), 14:30, 24 September 2015 (UTC) These remarks no longer apply: thanks to Rjensen for making this a worthwhile article: Noyster (talk), 10:03, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

The most important characterization of a politician left out?
[edit]As long as I live I was under the presumption that a politician, at least in a democratic society, is a representative of the people by whom he/she was chosen.
